There’s no doubt about it: Kuala Lumpur is a cultural melting pot. A deeper probe into the thought suggests the following question, “Why is it so?” Well think about it: we continuously search the past to make sense of the present, in order to map a better tomorrow. In this vein, we believe that the present KL represents the union of people from various backgrounds and beliefs, burgeoned after the independence of our nation (dated 31 August 1957, commonly known as “Hari Merdeka). To look back into the past is to trace where our melting pot culture started. Here are old photos of Kuala Lumpur that will make wish you can travel back in time!

BUKIT BINTANG

Bukit Bintang old photo

Formally known as Tong Shin Road, Bukit Bintang was the place where Malaysia’s deadly 13 May riots had taken place. Today, this area sees the lighter side of life. Influenced by old China aesthetics, Bukit Bintang is now peppered with countless bars and pubs, and is the go-to hub for nightlife lovers.

DATARAN MERDEKA

Dataran Merdeka in the 60s

So Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Father of Independence and our first ever Prime Minister, did not unleash the iconic chants of “Merdeka! Merdeka!” at this field; he did so at Stadium Merdeka. But the historical event fuelled many patriotic congregations at Dataran Merdeka. Today, the square is the default place for national gatherings and protests.

KUALA LUMPUR RAILWAY STATION

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station

Built in 1910, the railway station was the holy hub to offer travel across the city. Today, it sits second to the KL Sentral connecting hub, but it still serves as an important pitstop for the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) train services. The railway station is also a tourist attraction.

JALAN TUN PERAK

Back in the day, Jalan Tun Perak was known as Mountbatten Road. It is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest roads—so bask in that long overdue nostalgia every time you are here!

MEDAN PASAR

Medan Pasar

Located right behind Central Market, Dataran Medan Pasar hosts not only many heritage buildings but street musicians and artists, who would often honour their exquisite beauty in their impromptu performances. Imagine the lyrics that they would sing or the colours they would paint, if they could somehow jump across time and see the square in the 60s!

10 decors that easily elevate your rented space

10 decors that easily elevate your rented space
10 decors that easily elevate your rented space

When renting a space, we are bound by the rules our landlord has set. We might not be able to paint the walls or fix built-in cabinets, and understandably so. That said, while we as renters cannot do as we please, we can always personalise your living environment with easy, non-committal fixtures. The trick is to utilise decors that elevate your rented space without causing permanent change to it. The best thing about them? You can easily take them with you once it’s time to move out and move on later.

1. METALLIC FURNITURE

Metallic decors, whether in gold, copper, or brass, instantly add appeal to your space.

If there’s one thing that could instantly glamourise a space, it’s metallic furnishings and decors. Whether in gold, copper, or brass, they take a room from drab to fab. With their rustic sheen, metallic pieces are bold statements on their own. So be sure not to overdo them by keeping their numbers limited in a given room.

2. MIXED BEDDINGS

Mixing your beddings is a fun way to enliven your bedroom.

Nothing makes your home life more interesting than an eye-pleasing rest in bed. A good way to keep things interesting is to mix the colours and textures of your beddings. There’s no rule that says everything has to be matchy-matchy in the bedroom, so have fun exploring themes and palettes. The visual complements that mixed beddings provide are a good way to enjoy the unchangeable colour of your bedroom walls.

3. DISPLAYED ACCESSORIES

Who knew hats and clothing accessories can double up as home decors?

Instead of letting coat hangers take up space, why not hang your hats and other accessories on the wall? They make a great statement that informs your guests of your humour and zest for life. Also, doubling your clothing pieces as home decors is a beautiful way to save space. Think about the unused corners you could maximise with this idea!

4. ELEGANT POTS

House your indoor plants in pots in beautiful modern designs.

If you’re a fan of keeping plants in the house, why not go above and beyond with beautiful, out-of-the-norm potting for them? While we are in love with the minimalist weave basket pictured above, you can always opt for more colourful options, such as these terracotta pots mused about on Brit + Co. Beautiful plant pots are one of the easiest decors that elevate your rented space instantly.

5. LINES AND CURVES

Playing with lines and proportions is a good way to artistically refresh your perception of space.

Playing with lines and proportions is a good way to artistically refresh your perception of space.

Lines and proportions are a good way to refresh your spatial understanding. Treat your possessions as if they are actual artworks. Find new and creative ways to reuse them. Let that striped vase of yours (like the one pictured above) to double as a coffee table centrepiece. Better yet, position a strikingly coloured chair in an unmissable corner. There’s no better way to repurpose unused spaces than this approach!

6. GOOD LIGHTING

Good lighting is a must for ambience, even in a rented home.

A good lighting system ensures a good atmosphere in your sanctuary. In a city where fluorescent lights are a default option, beautiful lamps emitting soft incandescence are always a great alternative. The best ones come with a dimming option, which lets you control the degree of lighting you want for your home.

7. WALL ORGANISERS

Display your knick-knacks on your wall to save space and inspire conversations.

Much like the concept of the hanged hats earlier, you can use your walls to organise miscellaneous items and knick-knacks. We think wire wall organisers are always the best bet not only to group things together and but to let them hang for display.

8. QUIRKY CHAIRS

Chairs designed to appeal immediately transform a given perimeter.

Gone are the days of rigid wooden stools! Tracing their four-legged origins in ancient Egyptian times, the chair has seen countless updates over the years that redefine its function. Today, there are many designs and shapes that not only let you sit down comfortably but also inspire your home life with its elegant aesthetics. Think sculptures that you can sit on!

9. COOL MOOD BOARDS

Decorate your study or home office with illustrative mood boards.

What’s a beautiful home without some mood boards to provoke thoughts and suspend otherwise fleeting inspirations? A board with visual memorabilia is always great to inspire a study or a meditative corner hosting your intellectual pursuits, ambitious tasks and mindful activities.

10. MOBILE CLOSET

Live a mindful life with a beautifully designed mobile closet.

Wallpaper vs. Paint: Which Is Better For You?

Are you going to refinish your walls but wondering whether to paint or wallpaper? Below you’ll find pros and cons of using paint or wallpaper. After considering all factors, we believe you can get the final decision whether go for painting or wallpapering.

Let’s start with the pros of wallpaper;

The Pros of Wallpaper

  • Cost effective

You need to know that wallpaper can last up to 15 years and beyond, which can help you to save money in the long run.

  • Hide the imperfections

Wallpaper is an excellent cover-up choice if your walls have some bumps and dents, wallpaper can hides away these imperfections.

  • Variety choice and design

You can choose from an endless variety of wallpapers that match your house design, from child-friendly vinyl wallpapers to patterned, textured and even scented roles.

The Cons of Wallpaper

  • Time consuming

The process of applying and removal the existing wallpaper is more time consuming than painting. It can be a troublesome task when done on your own or costly with the use of wallpaper removal materials. Furthermore, some older wallpapers need to use more time to remove.

  • Peeling away easily

Wallpaper can strip off in large sheets, especially in the areas of high moisture or humidity such as kitchen and bathroom. In addition, these peels aren’t so easy to cover up.

Before considering to wallpaper installation, you should read up on things like making sure your first strip is level, pattern match, and hanging around the corners. It is so important that job is done correctly to prevent it can peeling away easily and it can be costly if you hire decorators to done this for you.

The Pros of Paint

  • Low cost

Paint can come at a fairly low cost and is normally fairly easy to accomplish.

  • We can do ourselves

Anyone can do a paint job by themselves and they just need to buy the painting tools such as self-painting rollers and pads. If there are  some flaws on the wall, it is much easier to fix the problem by just touch up a quick lick of paint to the flawed areas.

  • Can change the color anytime

Paint is relatively easy to paint over or wallpaper over if you gee tired of the existing color.

The Cons of Paint

  • Limited spectrum of finishes

Paint can only provide a color in a very limited spectrum of finishes from matte to glossy. On the flip side, wallpaper comes in a dazzling array of designs with an incredible selection of beautiful effects like pearl and glitter.

  • It will fades

Its color couldn’t last for so long. The color of paint generally fades after a few years.

  • It is a messy work

Unless you prepare well and take some time to protect your skirting boards, light switches and flooring, otherwise, you can end up with annoying stain of paints that are difficult to remove. Its like wallpaper, it will costly if you hiring painters and decorators to done it for you.

Depending on the type of paint you decide to use, heavier oil-based paint dries slower than you anticipate and its usually required a professional to apply. Oil-based paints also tend to run when being applied and are less resistant to heat.

Before deciding which one you should be chosen, you must consider all the factors as above. Apparently that wallpaper adds color, design and character to a room that paint simply cannot accomplish and can be more cost-effective option in the long run. But, it may needs professional help as you might done it in the wrong way and makes the wallpaper peeling away easily. On the other side, if you are looking for a very specific color or would like to change the colors once in a while, you may go for painting.
